What is Stellite?
Stellite is a cobalt-based alloy known for its exceptional wear resistance, high-temperature strength, and superior corrosion resistance. It is commonly used in extreme environments where heat, abrasion, and chemical exposure are concerns.Stellite Beneficial Properties
- Temperature range: 600°F to 1,112°F (315°C to 600°C)
- Standard hardness: 40-60 Rockwell C
- Superior Hardness & Wear Resistance – Stellite is extremely hard (Rockwell C 40-60), making it ideal for cutting tools, valve seats, and bearings in harsh environments.
- Corrosion & Oxidation Resistance – With its cobalt, chromium, and molybdenum composition, Stellite resists rust, oxidation, and chemical corrosion, even in acidic and marine environments.
- Exceptional Galling & Erosion Resistance – Reduces metal-on-metal wear, making it a top choice for valve components, engine parts, and turbine blades.
- Self-Lubricating Properties – Low friction characteristics reduce the need for additional lubrication, extending component lifespan.
- Toughness & Impact Resistance – Unlike brittle materials, Stellite combines hardness with toughness, allowing it to withstand shock, impact, and thermal cycling.
Stellite Custom Piston Ring Material Grade Options
Stellite piston rings are available in the following grade options:- Stellite 1: Highest wear resistance, extreme hardness, low ductility
- Stellite 3: Excellent abrasion & corrosion resistance, better impact strength than Stellite 1
- Stellite 6: General-purpose grade, good balance of wear, impact, and corrosion resistance
- Stellite 12: Higher hardness than Stellite 6, improved metal-on-metal wear resistance
- Stellite 21: High toughness & impact resistance, excellent corrosion resistance
- Stellite 31: High thermal resistance, superior strength at extreme temperatures
